Jesus and the Bible writers never encourage us to speak directly to people who have died and they discourage us from trying to contact them.
People who have died are not still here with us in a spiritual rather than physical way. People who have died are either in Paradise or in Hades. Either way, they are far from us, beyond talking distance.
Recognising that people who have died have gone from this life is a hard part of mourning. We do not help them, nor ourselves, by trying to communicate with them as though they are still close.
This Christian understanding is different from the common understanding that, if it helps us to talk to them, that’s fine. The most helpful way, for them and for us, is to allow them to move on into their new life and to allow ourselves also to move on, slowly and tearfully, to our new life.
If we talk to people who have died and have a sense that we are receiving a reply, this message can come from God. If the message is reassuring, helping us to know that they are fine where they are now, encouraging us to let them go, this is likely to be from God.
If the message gives us advice or other information and encourages us to keep up the conversation, this is likely to be from dark spirits pretending to be someone who has died. Far better to talk to Jesus and ask him to pass on any messages.
